Position Title Center for Minority Excellence Tutor/Mentor
Job Description Summary

Tutor-Mentors will provide part-time instruction in English, Math or other subject areas to help increase the academic level of performance for participants; create and manage a learning environment in which all students are treated equitably and with respect; utilize innovative, effective, and equitable tutoring techniques that will maximize learning and understanding of subject areas; also work with students to promote personal growth and achievement of student’s educational goals. This position is funded 100% by a PBI grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

Qualifications Desired

Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Must be able to demonstrate the proven abilities of intellectual reasoning, power of persuasion, and consistent dedication to the position. Excellent listening, oral, and written communication skills are required.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical interference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability: High Skills: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Computer Skills: Strong computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office (Publisher, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word) is required. Ability to learn to operate College-specific software and applications such as BANNER, LOLA, and CANVAS.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Criminal Background Clearance.
Other Qualifications: Ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines. Must be able to work in a fast paced environment with a demonstrated ability to multi-task.

Experience Required

Education and/or Experience:
Associate’s degree preferred.
A grade of B or higher in Math, English, Engineering, Statistics, or related field. Some experience in tutoring under-prepared students and students at-risk for academic failure.
The tutor/mentor must be able to work with minimum supervision; must have the ability to communicate effectively; must be sensitive to the diverse student needs; must have the ability to work as a team member; and must be knowledgeable of campus resources, services, policies, and procedures.
